When someone moves to a new neighborhood and needs a groomer, the first thing they do is Google "dog groomers near me" and sort by rating. A business with 4.8 stars and 120 reviews beats a business with better prices every time. Reviews are your most valuable marketing asset — and they're free.
Pet care is a high-trust category. Parents are handing you their dog — their family member. They are not going to try an unknown groomer on a whim. A strong review profile removes the risk in their mind. It shows that other pet owners trusted you and were happy. Every review is a referral at scale.
The window is narrow. Ask too early (before the groom is done) and the client is in a hurry. Ask too late (a week later) and the emotional high of picking up a clean, happy dog has faded. The sweet spot: within 2 hours of pickup.
In person at pickup: "We'd really appreciate a Google review if you have a minute — it helps other pet owners find us." Then send the SMS follow-up 90 minutes later with the direct link.
In person: "Did everything look good today? If you have a second, we'd love if you left us a quick Google review — it means a lot to a small business."
SMS (2 hours post-pickup): "Hi [Name]! We hope [Pet] is enjoying their fresh look 🐾 If you have 60 seconds, a Google review would mean the world to us: [link]"
Keep the SMS link as short as possible. Use a bit.ly or similar shortened link to your Google review page. Long links look spammy and get ignored.
Print a small card (business card size) with your QR code linking directly to your Google review page. Write "Loved your visit? Scan to leave us a review!" and hand one to every client at pickup. Cards get stuck on refrigerators. Clients share them with friends. The cost is pennies.
Every negative review response is read by potential clients — not just the person who left it. Respond within 24 hours, thank them for the feedback, address the specific issue, and invite them to call or email you directly to make it right. Never be defensive. Never get into a public argument. Your response shows future clients how you handle problems.
Template: "Hi [Name], thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry we fell short on your recent visit — that's not the standard we hold ourselves to. I'd love to make it right. Please give us a call at [number] and we'll take care of you."
Animal Friends OS can automatically send a follow-up SMS 2 hours after a completed appointment — thanking the client, asking if everything went well, and including your review link. This runs in the background for every client without you thinking about it.
