Opening a grooming salon involves more moving parts than most aspiring salon owners expect. This checklist covers the core requirements — organized so you know what to tackle in what order.
Phase 1: Legal and Financial Foundation
- Choose your business structure (LLC recommended for liability protection)
- Register your business name (DBA) with your state and county
- Obtain your EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS — free, takes 5 minutes online
- Open a dedicated business bank account — never mix personal and business finances
- Set up a business credit card to track expenses and build credit
- Research state grooming license requirements — varies significantly by state
- Obtain general liability insurance ($1M minimum recommended) and care, custody, and control coverage
- Check local zoning — your space must be zoned for commercial animal services
- Obtain any required local business licenses and permits
Phase 2: Your Space and Equipment
- Grooming tables (hydraulic preferred for large breeds)
- Professional dryers (high-velocity and stand dryer at minimum)
- Tubs and bathing station with non-slip surface
- Grooming arm and loop restraints
- Complete clipper set (multiple blade lengths) + backup clippers
- Scissors and shears (thinning, curved, straight)
- Shampoo and conditioner (breed-appropriate options)
- Water heater adequate for your volume
- Reception/waiting area separate from the grooming area
- Secure entry and exit — no dog can escape during check-in
Phase 3: Systems Before Day One
- Scheduling software set up and tested before you open
- Online booking widget live on your website before you launch
- SMS reminder system configured so your first client gets an automatic confirmation
- Payment processing connected and tested
- Digital intake form built and ready to send to new clients
- Service menu with prices finalized and entered into your software
Phase 4: Marketing Before Opening
- Google My Business claimed and complete with photos, hours, and services
- Instagram account created with a consistent handle and bio
- Facebook business page created
- Pre-opening announcement: "Opening [date] — book now!" with direct link
- Reach out to local dog trainers, vets, and pet stores about cross-referral opportunities
Your first clients' experience sets the pattern for your reputation — don't make them call to schedule on a phone you're too busy to answer.
