The Pet Care Software
Manifesto

10 principles for software that actually works

Written by someone who has operated a pet care business for over a decade, tried every platform on the market, and built his own when none of them were good enough.

01 Your software should not text your clients from its own number.

When a client gets a text about their dog's grooming appointment, it should come from your business phone number. Not a random 1-800 number. Not a five-digit shortcode. Not a number that changes every few months. Your clients have a relationship with you, not with your software vendor. Every text from an unfamiliar number erodes the personal connection you have spent years building. Your SMS system should use your number, period.

02 Your software should not take a cut of your payments.

You already pay a credit card processing fee to your merchant provider. That is the cost of doing business. What is not the cost of doing business is your software company skimming an additional 1%, 2%, or 3% off every transaction. If you process $30,000 a month, a 1% fee means $300 a month going to a software company for the privilege of letting your clients pay you. Use your own payment processor. Pay your own rates. Keep your own money.

03 Your software should not charge you per employee.

Hiring a new groomer should feel like a celebration, not a budget line item for your software bill. Per-user pricing creates a perverse incentive: every time your business grows, your software gets more expensive. The software does not do more work when you add a user. The servers do not cost meaningfully more. Per-user pricing exists because enterprise software companies invented it and pet care software companies copied it without asking whether it made sense for a five-person grooming shop. It does not.

04 Your software should not lock you into annual contracts.

If your software is good, you will keep paying for it. You do not need a contract to enforce loyalty—you need a product worth using. Annual contracts exist to protect software companies from their own churn rates. They are an admission that the company is not confident enough in its product to let you leave month to month. Animal Friends OS is month to month. If it stops being worth what you pay, cancel. We would rather earn your business every month than trap you into paying for something you no longer want.

05 Your software should be built by someone who does what you do.

They have never tried to check in four boarding dogs simultaneously while a walk-in asks about grooming prices and the phone rings with a daycare parent running late. They build software based on assumptions. We build software based on the 7 AM rush. There is a difference, and it shows up in every screen, every workflow, every notification.

06 Your data belongs to you, not to your software vendor.

Every client record, every appointment history, every grooming note—that is your data. You collected it. Your business depends on it. Your software vendor should make it easy to export, easy to migrate, and impossible to hold hostage. If switching software feels impossible because you cannot get your data out, that is not a feature. That is a cage. Animal Friends OS offers free white-glove data migration. We will help you bring your data in, and we will never make it hard to take it out.

07 Your software should work the way your facility works, not the other way around.

Every pet care business operates a little differently. Drop-off windows vary. Service combinations are unique. Pricing structures reflect local markets and relationships built over years. Your software should accommodate your workflow, not force you to change how you operate to fit its assumptions. If you have to restructure your scheduling because your software cannot handle a grooming-plus-boarding combo appointment, the software has failed—not you.

08 Your software company should not be owned by private equity.

When a private equity firm acquires a software company, the product roadmap changes. Not to serve you better—to generate returns for investors. Features stagnate. Support gets outsourced. Prices increase. New fees appear. The company that once felt like a partner starts to feel like a landlord. This is not speculation—it is the documented pattern across the pet care software industry over the last decade. Animal Friends OS is 100% bootstrapped, 100% founder-owned, and will remain that way. We answer to users, not shareholders.

09 Your software should make you look professional, not generic.

Your brand matters. Your colors, your logo, your voice—that is what clients recognize and trust. Your software should amplify your brand, not replace it with a generic template that makes every pet care business look identical. Booking widgets should match your website. Client portals should carry your branding. Report cards should look like they came from you. White-label everything. Your clients should never know or care what software you use.

10 Your software should cost what it is worth, not what the market will bear.

The pet care industry is built on small businesses. Independent operators. Family-run shops. People who got into this work because they love animals, not because they had capital to deploy. Charging $250 a month for software—plus per-user fees, plus transaction fees—is not pricing based on the cost of delivering the product. It is pricing based on how much you can extract from people who feel trapped. Starting at $69 a month — $109 or $169 if you need more texting reach — is what it costs to deliver great software and run a sustainable business. Nobody pays extra per staff member, per location, or per transaction. The rest is just greed.

This is what we believe.

If you believe it too, we built Animal Friends OS for you.
